Mel De'Vil

I was first exposed to jungle way back in 93/94 at various London house Parties, but it wasn't until leaving for university in Sheffield that I became hooked. It was hearing Logical Progression and the Metalheadz output and seeing Kemistry & Storm and Doc Scott in 95/96 that sealed the deal. In Feb 99 I brought some decks and a year later I had my first gig at a D&B and Hip Hop night 'Oxygen' promoted by myself and some friends.

During the next few years I worked on my mixing and got a number of gigs playing both D&B and House. During this time I had short term residencies at the Red Bar in Soho and the Zeta bar in Mayfair. In Feb 2003 I was flown out to Russia to play 2 gigs in Moscow, which was an amazing experience. After returning and playing at 'Phat Man Du' I hooked up with Dozer and JrS & the Healing Crew was formed. This is when I decided to fully focus my energy into D&B.

After getting our break on Internet radio station Subliminal Muzik at the end of 2003, we then were given a monthly guest slot on www.lifefm.co.uk. This lead to a weekly show that we dubbed the 'Healing Sessions' which is now running weekly on Sunday nights. I've also appeared on FM stations Dance UK and Ruud Awakening and in September 2004 I had 30min mix featured on DJ Flight's 'Next Chapter' show on BBC 1Xtra, as part of her 'Breaking New Talent' feature.

At the start of 2004 we were made part of the Enter The Jungle DJ agency and played at a number of events with them including Pure Jungle at SeOne and events in Leicester, Brighton and Kent. In May 2004 we played our first gig at Essence of Chi at Plan B in Brixton, which lead to us being made residents and part of 'EOC Artists' rosta at the end of 2004. Since then we have been involved with London Zu Family at The Scala as well as nights such as Ignition, Darklight in Brighton and Uncertifed in Aylesbury. In December 2004 we rammed out Keats Wine Bar in Ealing when we promoted our first night as a crew called 'Healing Soundz', which was designed to bring the diverse sounds of D&B back to West London.

I don't believe that a set of D&B should only contain one style, be it soulful and melodic or dancefloor rinse outs. I like to mix up all styles, but keep it deep moving. As a crew we are big fans of 'Liquid Funk' D&B, but we never restrict ourselves to one style and believe that you've have to show the full spectrum of D&B to do it justice. Dozer

My first exposure of Drum and Bass was in 1997 when I regularly attended Legends of the Dark Black in Brighton whilst at Uni. There I saw DJs like Grooverider, Andy C, Hype and the legendary MC Stevie Hyper D (RIP). I soon became hooked to sounds of producers such as Ram Trilogy, Bad Company and EZ Rollers. Between 1997 and 2001 I carried on raving whenever possible at The End, Fabric and other venues around London.

I started learning how to mix in early 2002 on JrS's decks and I played out for the first time alongside JrS at the end of 2002, at the Grey Horse in Kingston, supporting our friend's band. Soon after, JrS and I had our first taste of promotion, the drum and bass room at a house night called Phat-man-du at Imperial Gardens, and soon after hooked up with Mel DeVil to form the Healing Crew. Towards the end of 2003 DJ Domino gave me a guest slot on Subliminal Muzik radio, that led to a regular show where we hooked up with MC Wrekka until Subliminal sadly closed. In October 2003 we were offered a guest show on Paul Roast's www.lifefm.co.uk which led to regular shows every Wednesday and Sunday, 8-10pm. Since joining LifeFM we hooked up with Enter The Jungle and Essence of Chi crews and got invloved in promotion and playing at their nights and others. The first of these was Pure Jungle at SE1 in October 2003 and then Essence of Chi at Plan B and Herbal. I've also played at nights such as Drum & Bass Arena's 9th Birthday at The End, London Zu at The Scala, Traffic, Back 2 Life, Spit Kingdom, Darklight and Uncertified, as well a 4 nights in Toronto, Canada, including Cultured Drums. At the end of 2004 we held our first night, Healing Soundz, in conjunction with Life FM at Keat's Wine Bar in Park Royal. Bringing D&B to my back yard was always something I wanted to do. Seeing the venue ram jam with happy punters had me buzzin', all the effort had paid off.

I've always been a big fan of the liquid funk sounds and I mix it up with whatever I'm feeling from the other areas of the DnB spectrum from Tactile to Paradox and Digital to Syncopix, to name a few.

It all started around '97. I was subjected to the likes of LTJ Bukem, Goldie & EZ Rollers by mates. I soon became addicted to the beats, the bass & the energy supplied by D&B. I found myself buying as much DnB as possible. My collection grew with my love for the music & soon became an addiction. Once I started DnB raving on the regular it was all over, Jungle was my music of choice each & every.

In May '02 I bought my decks & started learning to mix along side my partner in crime, Dozer. After 8 months we were given an opportunity to play out. After seeing the way people responded to my set, I then knew that this is what I wanted to do, mixing out & entertaining people with the music that has me hooked.

At the back end of 2003 we were given our first break on the radio when we took control of a Thursday night slot on Subliminal Musik thanks to an invite from DJ Domino. From there we moved on to play on Tectonic radio & finally to the home of the healing sessions www.lifefm.uk where we currently deal with Sundays 8:00 - 10:00pm. From there we hooked up with two crews, initially ETJ, then on to EOC where we now live, working in a tight little team pushing the deeper sounds we love.

Since then my DJing has taken me from Canada to Kent & in venues from the trendy Plan B to the down right grimy SEOne. My influences have changed over time as my musical taste has developed but when it comes to what I play there is one rule, it's gotta have a groove!
